Before anything, a backgrounder: not long ago, Asia was introduced to HOOQ, a video-on-demand service meant to become our version of Netflix.  This service, built through a partnership amongst Singtel, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. Entertainment, offers online streaming of tons of movies, and even comes with an offline viewing option.

In short, HOOQ is like Spotify, but for movies.

And guess what: HOOQ has picked the Philippines as its Launchpad into the Asian audience.

Oh, and they’ve picked Globe as their partner in this groundbreaking endeavor.

A Smash Hit

HOOQ is the product of a joint venture involving Singtel, Sony Pictures Television, and Warner Bros. Entertainment. Through it, users can get access to a host of movies and TV shows, from Hollywood blockbusters to local hits.

And at the helm of HOOQ is Peter Bithos, the former Globe Telecom Chief Operating Advisor, and who also made the announcement of the service’s first distribution partnership.

“Our partnership with Globe Telecom, the leader in digital partnerships in the Philippines, helps us bring Philippine customers a premium video service and a new form of entertainment that combines the best of Hollywood, Asian and Philippine video content across all devices,” beamed Mr. Bithos.

Content he was referring to include the likes of Harry Potter, Spider-Man, and Inception, while also having the option of popular TV series such as Gossip Girl, Friends, and Smallville.

Users aren’t limited to flicks churned out by Hollywood, though. We can also enjoy local film and TV content, through partnerships with the country’s biggest studios like GMA Network, Viva Communications, Regal Entertainment, and ABS-CBN.

This adds films like Metro Manila, A Secret Affair, Shake Rattle and Roll, and Ang Tanging Ina, as well as classics like Dyesebel, Bagets, and Bituing Walang Ninging to the queue of films you can stream to your PC or device from anywhere.

Highly-rated TV shows like My Husband’s Lover, Mulawin, Tayong Dalawa, and Mara Clara, are also available.

Onward to a More Digital Life(style)

HOOQ’s emergence adds to the ever-expanding relevance of a more digital way of life slowly becoming the norm today.  Part of this revolution is the capability of interlinking two or more devices together, thereby sharing access to content that, in turn, becomes easier to integrate into one’s day.

Jonathan Auerbach, Singtel CEO for Group Digital Life, pointed to this while explaining the relevance of HOOQ in today’s highly-connected world.

“The rapid adoption of connected devices means more people in Asia are able to access the Internet anywhere and at anytime, driving demand for compelling content that enhances their digital lives,” he said.

A Globe of Possibilities

Filipinos are one of the most voracious consumers of digital content. A study in 2014 revealed that 85% of Filipinos watch online video content at least weekly – the second highest in Asia. Also, 7 out of 10 digital consumers in the country watch TV content and movies online like video-on-demand.

It is due to this fact that Globe is setting out on this partnership to offer its customers the ability to enjoy HOOQ, which will be available on a plan-based service. For P199 a month, Globe customers will be able to access HOOQ’s treasure trove of content. That’s thousands of movies a month for the price of one movie ticket.

It will also be available as a bundled service with GoSURF, and the Tattoo broadband services.

“Our customers, whether prepaid, postpaid or broadband, are increasingly embracing an always-on world where they expect a wonderful experience from innovative and engaging data and content offers,” said Globe CEO Ernest Cu.

“To meet their needs, we see the video-on-demand services offered by HOOQ as a critical offering representing the future of the industry. Now that consumers have access to a variety of international and local content, entertainment will now be more personal; and with Globe, this means experiencing it with the highest quality.”

Users will be able to access the full features of HOOQ by going to http://HOOQ.tv, where they can watch videos of their choice.
