Broadcast network ABS-CBN forays into telecom via Globe

    GIBO
Listed companies ABS-CBN Corp. and Globe Telecom Inc. bared earlier this week that they had signed a P3-billion network sharing agreement.

Through the deal, telecom giant Globe will provide ABS-CBN Convergence on nationwide basis capacity and coverage through the telco's cellular mobile network.

The two may also share assets like server towers and switches.

ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio Lopez III had said the company through ABS-CBN Convergence Inc. would offer traditional telecom services such as voice calls and short messaging system (SMS) as well as wireless internet to deliver content just like major players Globe and Smart Communications Inc..

Regulatory approvals from state-run National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) are still being sought. As such, ABS-CBN's foray into the telecom business would likely be launched in the second half of the year.

Globe president and chief executive officer Ernest Cu had said the partnership with ABS-CBN would create a new market for mobile users for its 35 million subscribers. — SOA/VS, GMA News

        • Won't there be network congestion with ABS-CBN sharing Globe's resources?

With the recent announcement that ABS-CBN would be launching their own telco utilizing Globe's resources and further to comments being posted in this community about advertised data speeds rarely being acheived, complaints on billing, onerous definitions of Fair usage policies manily due to the limitations of the network to accomodate many subscribers at the same time, will this not affect the quality of service the present subscribers are receiving?

What worries me more is that aside from ABS-CBN offering the usual call and text, "There will be television content that will be extended to the mobile platform; digital content which will be unique to the mobile platforms and which we'll be creating as a result of our consumer insights as to the way people like to consume content on mobile; and the third is an aggregated, user-generated content,"... and this requires A LOT OF data and bandwidth  which we present subscribers have been forever yearning for.

            I had a concern posted at http://community.globe.com.ph/t5/Network/Won-t-there-be-network-congestion-with-ABS-CBN-sharing-Globe-s/m-p/10266#M340.

With the present state of data with Globe and further to ABS-CBN's statement "There will be television content that will be extended to the mobile platform; digital content which will be unique to the mobile platforms and which we'll be creating as a result of our consumer insights as to the way people like to consume content on mobile; and the third is an aggregated, user-generated content", won't this further congest the system?

The strategic alliance may result in greater revenues for the two companies but may also drastically increase the problems we subscibers are encountering now. The already limited bandwidth subjected to an onerous "Fair usage policy" might further be depleted due to the expected increase of data users.

I can't comment for now. The merger is new and I do not know what's going to happen next.

One thing is for sure though, there is going to be congestion. I am not a technical person. Will the bandwidth increase? Will they put up more cell sites? :smileyindifferent:

Bandwidth and frequency is allotted  by NTC and paid for by the telcos and unless some revisions are made by law or a newer technology arises, the frequencies have been assigned already between Globe, Smart, Digitel (Sun) and Cure (Rebranded as Red Mobile).

We all know who owns Digitel and Cure now thus getting their frequencies as well so they have a lot of leeway.

The point here is that even if they increase cellsites a thousand fold but bandwidth and frequency is fixed then definitely we would expect more people to share an already limited resource.

The scenario would have been different if we are satisfied with the data service at this point in time and we are able to feel a certain confidence with additional subscribers riding on the data wave. But is such the scenario?

Was it in any way similar to ABS CBN kapamilya sim? parang yun lang din yan eh.
